Locksmiths in Observatory

Old doors, old locks and a suburb that changes tenants every year.

AAA Locksmiths works Observatory out of the City Bowl branch. When you phone 021 425 9966 you are talking to the people who dispatch the van, not to a call centre in another province that sells the job on to whoever is closest.

Obs is a student and creative suburb wrapped around Lower Main Road, with the university and the medical school campus and hospital on its doorstep, and the work follows from that. A house of five signs a lease in January and nobody knows how many keys the last five had. A back door on a Victorian semi has the original lock still in it and it has finally stopped turning. Somebody loses a bunch on a Friday night and has to be back inside before morning. A landlord wants every unit rekeyed between tenants and would rather book it than react to it.

The branch covers Observatory itself, Salt River, Mowbray, Woodstock and the streets running down towards the river and up towards Groote Schuur. Tell us the street and we will tell you honestly how long we will be — Obs is small, but the one-ways and the traffic circles are not obvious to anybody who does not work here.

Services we do in Observatory

Everything below is work the City Bowl van does in this suburb. Follow a link for the detail, or phone the branch and describe what has happened.

Emergency Locksmith ServicesA bunch of keys lost on a Friday night on Lower Main Road, or a front door that latched behind you on the way to the bin. The line is answered around the clock.Residential LocksmithsThe core of the work in Obs. New tenants moving into a shared house, a rekey between leases, or a lock in an old door that has simply given up.Vehicle LocksmithCars opened where they are parked, on a narrow Obs street or outside the hospital, without waiting for a tow truck to find a gap.Transponder KeysOne key left for an older car and no spare in the house. Cut and coded at the vehicle before that key is the one that gets lost.Commercial LocksmithsThe small shopfronts, bars, studios and offices along Lower Main Road and Station Road, where the premises are as old as the houses.Safe LocksmithsA safe built into a wall by an owner three owners ago, or a small business safe whose combination left with a manager.Master Key SystemsStudent houses and small blocks: one landlord key that opens every room, and a room key that opens only one.Keyed Alike SystemsFront door, security gate and back door on one key, which is worth a great deal in a house where the key gets shared five ways.High Security LocksRestricted keys for a rental where the honest answer to "how many copies exist" is that nobody knows.Deadlocks & DeadboltsFitted into old timber doors and frames that need checking first, because a heavy bolt in a soft frame is theatre rather than security.Escape HardwareExit hardware for the halls, venues, churches and student residences in the area that have to open outward under a crowd.Professional LocksmithOriginal Victorian hardware, sash fasteners, rim locks and things with no modern equivalent. Describe it and we will tell you if it can be saved.

What happens when you call from Observatory

The branch needs three things to give you a real arrival time: where you are, what has happened, and what you are locked out of.

  1. 01
    Give us the street

Observatory, Salt River, Mowbray or Woodstock. The street name is what sets the arrival time, not the suburb.

  2. 02
Say how old the door is

On Obs housing stock this matters. An original lock in an original frame is a different job to a modern cylinder, and it changes what we bring.

  3. 03
    You get the price first

The full amount is agreed on the call. Nobody starts work on a number you have not heard.

  4. 04
    The van comes to you

A marked AAA vehicle and a locksmith who can identify himself. The work is tested with you before we leave.

Why a City Bowl number matters in Obs

Ask for Michael. A local line and a name are the two things a fake listing cannot copy.

Search "locksmith near me" from Observatory and some of what comes back is a national number wearing a local name. The call is answered somewhere else, the job is passed on, and the person at your gate is a stranger to both you and the business you thought you phoned — which is not what you want at one in the morning on a street of student houses.

021 425 9966 rings the City Bowl branch, and your friendly emergency locksmith in the Observatory area is Michael. The team there knows the difference between upper and lower Obs, knows what the Main Road and the hospital approaches do in the morning, and can tell you where the van actually is rather than guessing at a number that sounds reassuring.

It also means we know what this suburb keeps calling about. Obs is a rental suburb with a very short cycle — a large part of it changes hands every January — sitting in some of the oldest housing stock in the city. Original locks in original doors, decades of tenants, and no way of knowing how many keys are still out there. Handover lock changes and lost keys are not emergencies here, they are the normal week, and they are cheaper when they are booked instead of rushed.

Questions from Obs

The things tenants, landlords and students ask the City Bowl branch before they agree to a callout. If yours is not here, ask it on the phone.

We are moving into a rental and want the locks changed. How does that work?

It is the most common job in this suburb. Tell us how many doors, whether there is a security gate, and whether you want them keyed alike so the house carries one key instead of four. In most cases only the cylinder changes, which is faster and cheaper than replacing the whole lock.

The lock in my old front door has stopped turning. Can it be repaired?

Often, yes. A lot of Obs doors still have their original hardware, and a lock that has gone stiff over decades can frequently be serviced rather than replaced. Tell us roughly how old the door is and how the lock is behaving when you call.

How long does it take to reach Observatory?

Not long from the City Bowl branch, but it depends on the street and on what the Main Road and the hospital approaches are doing at that hour. The branch gives you a time from where the van actually is when you call.

Can you open my door without damaging it?

Usually. Most residential locks can be picked open, which leaves the door and the lock exactly as they were. Older doors sometimes cannot be, and when yours is one of them we say so before anybody starts.

Are you open at night and over weekends?

The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including public holidays. Nights and weekends are a normal part of the work rather than an exception.

I am a landlord with several units. Can one key open all of them?

Yes, that is a master key system: a landlord key that opens every unit while each tenant’s key opens only theirs. It is worth doing at the same time as a rekey rather than as a separate visit.

Will I know the price before you arrive?

Yes. The full amount is agreed on the phone before the van leaves the branch. If what we find on site changes the job, we stop and tell you before doing anything else.

How do I know the person at my gate is really from AAA?

The vehicle is marked, the technician carries identification, and the branch can tell you on the phone who is on the way — Michael or one of the City Bowl team. If anything does not match, do not open the gate — phone 021 425 9966 and check.
