Keyed alike systems

Exactly what it says: one key opens the lot.

A keyed alike system is a set of locks, padlocks or cylinders that all open with one key. It is similar to a master key system, with one important difference: there is only one key, and there are no individual keys for each lock.

That makes it the right answer whenever the same person needs to open everything and nobody needs to be kept out of anything. A house where the front door, back door, garage and gate all take one key. A business where the same key opens the storerooms. Schools and hotels use it for the same reason.

If you do need different people opening different doors, that is a master key system rather than this one, and it is worth a conversation before anything gets cut.

We help in these situations

The question is always the same: does everybody who holds this key need to open all of these doors?

  • Too many keys for one houseFront door, back door, garage and gate brought onto a single key you actually recognise.
  • Padlocks all over the propertyGates, stores and outbuildings keyed to the same key as the doors, rather than a drawer full of padlock keys.
  • Schools, hotels and rental propertyWhere the same staff open the same set of doors every day and nobody needs to be excluded.
  • New locks, or matching the ones you haveWe can key new cylinders alike, or rekey suitable existing locks to match instead of replacing them.

Common questions

If you are weighing keyed alike against master keying, call and describe the property.

How is this different from a master key system?

Keyed alike gives you one key and no individual keys. A master key system gives every lock its own key plus a master that opens all of them. Keyed alike is for convenience; master keying is for controlling who opens what.

Can my padlocks be on the same key as my doors?

Yes. Padlocks and cylinders can be keyed together, which is usually the point on a property with gates and outbuildings.

Do all my locks have to be replaced?

Not necessarily. Depending on the brand and condition, existing cylinders can often be rekeyed to match. We will tell you which of your locks can join the set and which cannot.

Is one key less secure?

The lock is exactly as secure as it was. What changes is the consequence of losing the key, because that one key opens more. It is worth pairing a keyed alike set with a lock you cannot easily have copied.

Can I add a door later?

Yes. Tell us it is part of an existing keyed alike set and we will key the new cylinder to the same key.

Include gates, garages and padlocks — they can usually join the set.
