Locksmiths in the Cape Town CBD

Offices, buildings, apartments and vehicles, in the working centre of the city.

AAA Locksmiths works the CBD out of the City Bowl branch. When you phone 021 425 9966 you are talking to the people who dispatch the van, not to a call centre in another province that sells the job on to whoever is closest.

The centre calls about different things to the suburbs. A tenant hands back a floor on Long Street and every cylinder has to change before Monday. A restaurant on Bree Street loses the back door key on a Saturday night. A building manager on Loop Street wants one key that opens the plant room, the roof and the meter cupboards, and nothing else. An old office block on St George’s Mall has been converted into apartments and the entrance system was never designed for forty separate tenants.

The branch covers the grid from the Company’s Garden down to Strand Street and across from the Bo-Kaap to the Castle, plus Gardens, Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof, Vredehoek, Zonnebloem and De Waterkant. Tell us the building and the floor and we will tell you honestly how long we will be, and where the van can actually park.

Everything below is work the City Bowl van does in the centre. Follow a link for the detail, or phone the branch and describe what has happened.

Emergency Locksmith ServicesA shopfront that will not lock at closing, or a flat door that swung shut behind you on the eleventh floor. The line is answered around the clock.Residential LocksmithsCity apartments and converted office floors, where the front door, the lobby door and the parking door are three different problems.Vehicle LocksmithKeys shut inside a car in a City Bowl parkade or on a meter bay. Give us the level and the bay number and we come to it.Transponder KeysReplacement chipped keys coded to the car where it stands, so a lost key does not turn into a tow out of the centre.Commercial LocksmithsOffices, restaurants and retail through Long Street, Bree Street, Loop Street and the Adderley Street blocks, booked after trading where that suits you better.Safe LocksmithsOffice safes and cash drawers that have stopped opening, and safes left behind in a suite by the previous tenant.Master Key SystemsThe heart of the work in this part of town. One building key for the manager, a floor key for each tenant, and a suite key that opens nothing else.Keyed Alike SystemsUseful where one business holds three units in the same block and nobody wants three separate bunches on the counter.High Security LocksRestricted key systems for buildings where an uncontrolled copy is the real risk, not somebody picking the lock.Deadlocks & DeadboltsSerious bolts on street-level doors and back entrances, specified so they do not fall foul of the fire requirements.Escape HardwarePanic bars and fire exit furniture on office floors, basements and stairwells that have to open outward under a crowd.Professional LocksmithBuilding hardware nobody can identify, an obsolete lock, a door that has never closed properly. Describe it and we will tell you.

What happens when you call from the CBD

The branch needs three things to give you a real arrival time: where you are, what has happened, and what you are locked out of.

  1. 01
    Give us the building

A street number and a floor is worth more than a suburb here. Say whether there is after-hours security and how the technician gets in.

  2. 02
Describe the lock or the car

A suite door, a shopfront, a safe or a vehicle. For a car we need the make, model and year before the van leaves.

  3. 03
    You get the price first

The full amount is agreed on the call. Nobody starts work on a number you have not heard.

  4. 04
    The van comes to you

A marked AAA vehicle and a locksmith who can identify himself. The work is tested with you before we leave.

Why a City Bowl number matters in the centre

A local line is the one thing a fake listing cannot copy.

Search "locksmith near me" in the CBD and some of what comes back is a national number wearing a local name. The call is answered somewhere else, the job is passed on, and the person who arrives at reception is a stranger to both you and the business you thought you phoned. In a building with an access-controlled lobby that is not a small problem.

021 425 9966 rings the City Bowl branch. The team there knows which streets are one-way against you at five, knows that a van cannot simply stop outside a Long Street shopfront on a Friday night, and can tell you where the vehicle actually is rather than quoting a number that sounds reassuring.

It also means we know what the centre keeps calling about. A lot of this stock was built as offices and is now lived in, so entrance systems, buzzer panels and lobby doors carry far more traffic than they were specified for. Cylinders wear out early, master key charts drift as tenants change, and the same suite gets rekeyed three times in five years. None of that is an emergency — it is just a normal month in the CBD, and it is worth booking rather than waiting for the failure.

Questions from the city centre

The things people ask the City Bowl branch before they agree to a callout. If yours is not here, ask it on the phone.

How long does it take to reach an office in the CBD?

Usually quickly, because the branch works this ground, but it depends on the hour. Between four and six the one-way system does more damage to an arrival time than the distance does. The branch quotes from where the van actually is.

A tenant has moved out of our floor. Can you change everything at once?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs in the centre. Tell us how many doors, whether the floor sits on a master key chart and whether the new tenant wants their own restricted keys. It is usually cheaper to change cylinders than whole locks.

Can you work after hours so we do not close during trading?

Yes. Evening and overnight work in offices, restaurants and retail is normal here rather than an exception, and it is booked at the same rate structure you are quoted on the call.

Can you set up a master key system for our building?

Yes. It starts with a conversation about who should open what — the building manager, the cleaners, each tenant, the plant room. We chart it, then cut and fit it. Existing buildings can usually be brought onto a system without replacing every lock.

Are you open at night and over weekends?

The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including public holidays. Nights and weekends are a normal part of the work rather than an exception.

My keys are locked in the car in a parkade. Can you get in there?

Yes. Give the branch the parkade, the level and the bay, and tell the attendant a marked AAA vehicle is coming. Have the make, model and year of the car ready.

Will I know the price before you arrive?

Yes. The full amount is agreed on the phone before the van leaves the branch. If what we find on site changes the job, we stop and tell you before doing anything else.

How do I know the person at reception is really from AAA?

The vehicle is marked, the technician carries identification, and the branch can tell you on the phone who is on the way. If anything does not match, do not let them through — phone 021 425 9966 and check.
